What is AI really — and what is it not?

The situation

AI is on everyone’s lips. In meetings, in the media, in sales conversations. Few topics are being discussed as intensely right now. Decision-makers are under pressure: those who don’t use AI fall behind. Those who use it wrong lose money.

The problem

Most people have a false idea of what AI is and what it can do.

AI is perceived as an intelligent, thinking system. A digital employee that understands, judges, and decides. Expectations are correspondingly high. And the disappointment is correspondingly large when reality doesn’t deliver.

False expectations lead to false decisions. And false decisions cost time, money, and trust.

The root cause

When we talk about AI today, we are in most cases talking about Large Language Models, or LLMs. Models like ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini.

What these models do at their core is simpler than most people think: they predict word by word how a sentence is likely to continue. Based on enormous amounts of training data, they have learned which words and sentences are likely to follow in which context.

This means: AI does not understand what we mean in terms of content. It selects the statistically most probable continuation.

Nobody explains this honestly. Instead, AI is marketed like an all-knowing assistant. That is the origin of almost every misconception.

What can we take away from this?

Those who want to use AI meaningfully need a clear picture of its strengths and weaknesses.

What AI is good at today:

Analyzing unstructured text data and outputting it in a structured form. Emails, meeting notes, reports: AI extracts the essentials from them in seconds.

Classifying, extracting, and converting into structured data. Chaotic input becomes clean, usable output.

Acting as a sparring partner for brainstorming and initial idea generation. AI is a tireless conversation partner that knows no tunnel vision.

Searching large volumes of text quickly and extracting relevant information. What used to take hours now takes minutes.

Writing code and developing software. Even without deep programming knowledge, functional applications can be built today. What used to require entire development teams can now be done by a single person with the right prompt.

Translating languages and converting texts into different styles or formats. Fast, scalable, and at impressive quality.

What AI is not good at today:

Reliably reproducing facts correctly. AI hallucinates. It presents false information with the same confidence as correct information. Those who don’t know this make decisions on a false basis.

Recognizing missing information in a prompt and asking for clarification. Instead of naming gaps, AI often fills them in on its own. The result sounds plausible but is invented.

Independently recognizing and correcting errors in its own output. AI does not know what it does not know. Without an explicit hint from the user, an error remains an error.

Maintaining context consistently across long conversations. AI loses the thread. It locks onto false assumptions even when explicitly corrected. At some point there is no way out of that dead end.

Offering critical pushback. Many AI models tend to agree rather than correct honestly. Even when the user is wrong, they often receive confirmation instead of contradiction. This is dangerous when AI is used as an objective advisor.

Reliably checking grammatical or factual correctness. AI will confirm on direct questioning that a sentence is correct — even when it is not. Trust is good, verification is better.

The biggest risk is barely discussed.

People are no longer learning the fundamentals from the ground up because AI appears to take over. But those who don’t know the craft cannot evaluate the tool.

An engineer who never learned to think in systems cannot assess AI-generated code. A project manager who never learned to evaluate risks cannot judge AI-generated reporting.

AI is only as good as the person interpreting its results. Those who don’t develop that ability adopt results blindly. And that is one of the greatest risks I see in practice.

What applies in academia applies even more to AI.

Those who work scientifically consult multiple sources, question statements critically, and form their own opinion. This principle is not less important with AI — it is more important than ever.

AI is a source. A powerful, fast, impressive source. But just one source. Those who adopt AI results blindly without questioning, verifying, and cross-referencing with other sources make the same mistake as someone who uses a single Wikipedia page as the sole basis for an important decision.

Awareness of the limits and risks of AI is not a weakness. It is the prerequisite for using it meaningfully.

AI is a powerful tool. But a tool — not an employee. Not a decision-maker. Not a quality system.

Those who use AI meaningfully build robust processes around it. They define clear inputs, verify outputs, and keep responsibility with the human.
